ROSACEA/SPLOTCHY SKIN Make-Up Techniques
Rosacea is a common but often misunderstood condition that is estimated to affect over 45 million people worldwide. It affects white-skinned people of mostly north-western European descent, and has been nicknamed the 'curse of the Celts' by some in Britain and Ireland. It begins as erythema (flushing and redness) on the central face and across the cheeks, nose, or forehead but can also less commonly affect the neck and chest. As rosacea progresses, other symptoms can develop such as semi-permanent erythema, telangiectasia (dilation of superficial blood vessels on the face), red domed papules (small bumps) and pustules, red gritty eyes, burning and stinging sensations, and in some advanced cases, a red lobulated nose (rhinophyma). The disorder can be confused with, and co-exist with acne vulgaris and/or seborrhoeic dermatitis. Rosacea affects both sexes, but is almost three times more common in women, and has a peak age of onset between 30 and 60. The presence of rash on the scalp or ears suggests a different or co-existing diagnosis, as rosacea is primarily a facial diagnosis.

Glycolic Acid 35% Gel Peel, 30ml (Professional)ReviewsI bought this after reading so many other reviews. So far I have used it four times. The first three times I used it I could not tolerate the tingling, prickly (almost like glass in your face) sensations. I have very sensitive skin so prehapes that has something to do with why my tolerance was not very high. So only keeping it on for the first two minutes the first three times it didn't seem to do a lot. It did though leave a smoother feel to my skin and after the third time my pores looked a little smaller. I never itched afterwards but my checks and nose (Where my pores are the largest) almost seemed to toughen. After about a week they were soft again. It was not noticable by the human eye it just felt that way to me, by touch. The fouth time I used it, the prickly sensation seemed much more tolerable therefore I left it on for 5 minutes. I can see a much better result and my skin itches a good bit. They say not to scratch or rub so I'm doing my best not to. But the skin around my nose where the pores seem to be very large, for my entire life but especially after giving birth, seemed to be almost completely gone now. The pores around my checks are considerably smaller and much finer looking so they are not noticable anymore and the toughness that I had before is not there this time. I also changed facial creams so I don't know if that has anything to do with it but in my opinon it does. The better results I really think are due to leaving it on longer. In addition, I can SEE more smoothness on the rest of the skin on my face, including two very tiny spots, that were from sun damage, have been aletered. Only one shimmers a slight visual the other is compeltely gone. As for my very fine lines they are still there. But with the rest so far I'm fairly pleased. I had one facial before that they used a chemical peel in a salon and the peel didn't tingle so much and it was left on for a good 15 minutes. The bad part about my peel is the girl was apparently ruff and due to that I had scabes on my face afterwards. I'm told that should never of happened. Therefore, I'm very happy I found this product and will certainly continue to use it and maybe it will hit the fine lines soon. I will keep my bottle after it is empty just in case I want to repurchase it but I most likely will look to try a different product. Used the peel four times and skin conditions have remarkedly improved. However the last peel has only slight improvement as skin has adapted to the acid. Will have to go for a 50-70% soln. Would advise anyone to purchase a 50-70% soln and dilute it to 35% as a start. It saves money too. I am a retired skin care professional. Glycolic Acid peel is really best at stimulating cell renewal. It's excellent for older skin renewal that has become sluggish, thus tired wrinkled skin accumulates on the top. I used the product differently than directed. You want to get the product to penetrate the skin. I put it in my hand and massaged into my thoroughly cleansed face, being careful to avoid the eyes. Any left, I massaged into my hands to clean up old skin there. It takes weeks to finally see good results, but my skin does look smoother and younger. I also was able to remove several embedded blackheads with ease. I tried this product after a lot of research, i found it did just what it said it would my face is Sooo smooth and i could not be happier. I've used the peel twice so this review may be premature. I am seeing an improvement in my skin tone. I am African American with very oil skin and hyperpigmentation left from using Proactive serveral years ago. My scars are primarily on my cheek & a few on my forehead. After meeting with an esthetician who suggested I spend $980 on Obagi & an additional $500 on chemical peels, I thought I'd try this peel first. I also purchased the Salicylic peel which I have not tried yet, and Kiss My Face Pore Shrink which I've tried and LOVE. I did not experience a lot of stinging, I left on my face for no more than 2 minutes. I put Coconut Oil on my eyebrows & around my eyes & mouth, as a protectant. I applied with a Q-tip, this seemed easier than using a cotton pad. I washed with baking soda to deactive the acid. I will write another review after I've completed the series (using 6 times) but right now, I am very pleased. Average Rating:![]() |

Salicylic Acid 20% Gel Peel, 30ml (Professional)ReviewsMy middle-age skin was in need of a wake-up. I hadn't had a professional facial in about 4 months, and I really didn't want to drop $100 on another, so I tried this. Good choice for immediate results. My main issues -- congested skin, big pores. I saw immediate improvement after only two applications for a minute or so. I was definitely in need of help, and this product helped. It also is helped to heal a cystic pustule. The only time I saw such immediate improvement on one of these was when I resorted to steroidal shots to heal a nagging one. Money well spent in my opinion. I've been using this product for 5-weeks. Honestly, my skin looks the same. The only time I had any peeling was when I got a little peel happy and applied Alpha Hydroxy on off days. YES! I know. Not everyone will experience peeling all the time, and not that I really wanted that. I just wanted...something. Granted, I only spent $18.95. I should have known better. Bah. First you should know that I have been struggling with acne since I was 12 and have been on everything you can think of and have spent countless dollars on solutions, concoctions, pills that ultimately did not work. I did find some relief while on Accutane, but after 2 rounds of it (2003, 2006). But now, 4 years later, I am still breaking out like I'm experiencing purberty all over again. I decided I didn't want to put my body through the stress of Accutane again and deal with the dangerous side effects. I have so many scars from the acne and new acne continue to appear daily. And being a woman of color, the discoloration of the post acne marks leaves your skin looking horrible. I literally look disfigured. My complexion is so many different shades that I could never leave the house bare faced. I have literally become a prisoner of makeup. To try to help this, I've began to monitor my diet (limited fried foods, dairy, citrus, fats) and increase my amount of water intake in hopes that my skin will notice and clear up. I have yet to see any hope with this plan. So in desperation, I've decided I need to start my skin over fresh. I've had several chemical peels in the past from dermatologist but being a graduate student, I don't have the funds to afford them now. So after doing some research, I found this peel. After reading some awesome reviews, I decided to give it a shot. I received the 20% salicylic acid on Wed (3/3/10) and decided to use it the very next day (today). I also decided that I would use the peel every other day (3x/week)for 6 weeks before stopping and giving my skin a break. Before I applied the peel, I washed my face with a gentle cleanser using warm/hot water and rinse in cool water. I patted my face with a towel and allowed my face to further dry for roughly 5 min. I applied the peel using a Q-tip and started with my forehead working my way down my face and then to my cheeks. Soon (about 30 sec. into the application) my face began to tingle then burn! I expected this and had a fan nearby. The use of the fan did allow me to stand the peel for approx. 4 min. for the 1st application. I do realize the directions say begin with one min but that just seemed like a waste of time and I could tolerate it for much longer than that, so I did (everyone's face/pain tolerance is different). After I couldn't stand it any more, I rinsed off with cold water. The burning sensation persisted during the rinsing and the towel blotting. It wasn't until I applied Ambi SPF30 face moisterizer that the pain stopped. My face looked the exact same (still acne present and dark spots galore) but my skin did feel noticeably softer. No redness or signs of irritation. What I did notice though, was that the acne that was present was beginning to dry up and become smaller in size. That's a good sign. I repeat I've only used it once so I guess I'll see how it does. I'll check back in 6 weeks when I've had a series of mini peels for a full review. I have had problem skin forever. In 2006, I went all out and spent money on a plastic surgeon to remove some scars and then underwent expensive acne treatments in his office. That only lasted as long as I kept going to his office for the treatments. Once I quit going within weeks my skin looked terrible again and the scar came back just a bit. So since then I've had terrible skin. I was willing to spend so much money on it and I just tried to deal with my skin condition using over the counter products UNTIL I discovered this Salicylic Acid Peel. It's been 3 weeks since I bought it. And wow, what an improvement in my skin. The scar area is about to fall off right now. My pores are significantly smaller. My oily skin isn't oily anymore. The overall condition of my skin is such an improvement. Just in the nick of time too because I have an important event coming up and I will look great in my new skin. This stuff works. Try it out and see your skin condition clear up and improve overall. I have one wrinkle in between my forehead which I haven't had luck getting rid of but I'll continue to apply this and see if it improves. I'll keep you posted. Best product I've found on amazon.com. I have been using this peel for a few weeks now hoping for great results like I read in the reviews. I'm not sure why, but this peel REALLY dries out my skin - just on the bottom have (jaw, lower cheek). I have very oily skin, so this was unexpected. I followed the directions and left it on for less than a minute each time, but still ended up w/ several brown patches of very dry, scabby skin. Then two days later I start to peel severely and this lasts a few days. I'm sure it's a great product, I just haven't had good results. It did, however, reduce oil and blackheads. I'm going to try it in combination w/ the Lactic Acid 50% peel as recommended and see how that goes. Average Rating:![]() |

HQ+ Gel Peel, 30ml (Professional)ReviewsI felt a burning sensation when I first applied it on my face. The first 30 seconds was almost unbearable but I tolerated through for 5 minutes. Very fine scabs started appearing on the third day. The results only starts to show on the sixth day when I felt a softer and smoother skin and also pigmented spots became lighter. I am on my third round now and I hope to see more better results appearing. I wanted a peel that would help get rid of my hyperpigmentation from acne scars, lessen the appearance of my pores/acne scars, and help me control my mild-moderate acne breakouts. The first time I used this product I made sure to read the directions, tested a spot on my inner elbow, avoided heavy sun exposure prior, stopped using topicals for 48 hours before etc. The day after using the peel my face felt very calm. It felt like my face was finally "normal", it felt very smooth and soft. And over the next few days I noticed no new acne appearing. Its very important that you don't expose your face to direct/continuous sunlight for at least a day after doing the peel. Also, you should wear a spf 30 suncreen whenever you go out, even if its cloudy outside. If you don't you will have wasted your time because your skin will just get even more damaged. First of all, I want to mention how very strong this peel is. Not only does it have a rather strong chemical odor, but it really stings when applied. The instructions say to leave it on for 30 seconds for the first application and build up to several minutes on subsequent applications. However, the first time I used this product, I could only stand leaving it on for about 10 seconds. It stung rather intensely, and the chemical fumes made my eyes water so that I could barely keep them open. I had to rinse my skin off for a good 5 minutes to makes the burning stop, but after that, my skin was hardly red and it didn't burn at all anymore. Each time I use this, I've only been able to keep it on for about 10-15 seconds longer than the previous time before I had to rinse it off. Also, the instructions say to apply only once every 10-14 days, but I've been using it every 7 days since I rinse it off so quickly. Even though I haven't been able to keep it on for more than 30 seconds tops, I've really noticed a difference in my skin. I have pretty bad skin: acne-prone, lots of old indented scars, and hyperpigmentation like no other. But I just did my third application, and my skin is a lot smoother and old acne spots are very noticeably fading. My pores practically disappeared overnight, and my face is sooo much less oily during the day. In just one day, I could already see results, and they just get better with each application. I've used this company's glycolic peel before, which made me break out after each use and left my skin red for a week afterwards. However, I've haven't had any breakouts with this peel, and it doesn't leave my face red at all (but that might be because I leave it on for only a short amount of time). Overall, I would really recommend this product (use it carefully!), and I can't wait to see the full results in a few more weeks! UPDATE: So I'm on my second round of treatment (6 weeks at a time), and I'm still loving this product. Now that I've been able to keep it on for 3-4 mins though, it does make my skin slightly red. But it's nothing terrible, and it starts to fade in a few days. I am still seeing improvement in the texture and complexion of my skin. After my first 6-week treatment, I took a break for 4 weeks, and I noticed that my skin continually looked better and better every week. Now that I'm back on the peel, it does look a little worse, but once I'm done again, it will probably start getting better. So in my experience, it takes several weeks after treatment to get the full effect of this amazing peel. I have "bad skin" and this is great for that problem. I have yet to head back to the doctor for pills for my acne (which made me gain weight) and awful injections. I recommend this product. Also this company is one of the best to order product froms. Many times they send me extra samples of other peels and I always receive my product early. I have only used this product twice. My skin is acne prone with clogged pores that I haven't been able to get rid of. This product cleared out many of the clogs. I also had 3 large infected pustules on my cheek and after one use of this product and a dab of benzoyl peroxide they are substantially decreased in size after 24 hours. Haven't seen any difference in the scars. The product smells, but it is tolerable. Product stings, but not as intensely as the glycolic peels. Average Rating:![]() |

Rosacea: Your Self-Help GuideReviewsI have lived with rosacea for over 10 years. In this time I have found out a lot of what works and does not work for me. This book first and foremost really encourages and affirms that when it comes to rosacea you need to be your own expert. What might trigger or help on person might do nothing for you or do just the opposite. I loaned this book to a friend who had just been newly diagnosed. She found it to be a great help So whether you have had rosacea for a long time or newly diagnosed this book has value. It is well worth the price and is by far less expensive than many of the creams, pills, or diets that claim to have an impact on rosacea. Buy this book first then decide which options you want to pursue next on your quest to manage your rosacea. I don't know what School of Natural Medicine Arlen Brownstein went to but she does not treat the body wholistically nor does she believe in the basic tenet of naturopathy which is that the body can heal itself through natural means. She is clearly neurotic about her skin and has not put her education to practical use in her own life. It's sad but if you think you're going to buy a book from a wholistic perspective you will be disappointed. The first thing she states is that hers is an incurable illness. This is hypocritical coming from someone using N.D. Naturopathic Doctor as her title. She should more appropriately call herself an amateur dermatologist without education or medical degree. The book is not holistic and it is not healing. I recommend the Rosacea Diet instead. This author is holistically oriented though he doesn't have an n.d. after his name. I used the paleolithic diet from one of the websites he mentioned and cured my rosacea. It is not an incurable illness. If you have that belief then that is what will be for you, as that is what is for her. I just received this book, and already I like it! It has a lot of information about rosacea, about treatment, and ways I can do something about it. Most of this is new information to me. Beginning with an exact description of my experience in being diagnosed (down to the two pamphlets and vagueness), I found a lot to think about and to be surprised and comforted by. Rosacea had been making my life miserable for the past five years. My depression over the disease was literally ruining my life. A fellow rosacean suggested this book to me after she found it so helpful. I have been following the suggestions in the book for a little over a month now. There is no doubt that my skin has begun to dramatically improve. I hope the author reads these reviews, because I want her to know how thankful I am to her. If you have rosacea, get this book. I can't recommend it highly enough. I reviewed this book and gave it a poor rating a few months ago, and now I find that the review has disappeared. Here is the problem with this book in a nutshell: WAY too much data that is also very poorly presented, especially if you are a new sufferer of this condition. Perhaps a long-time sufferer of rosacea could pick through this helter-skelter mosaic and find some grains of wisdom, but the newbie like me will probably be overwhelmed and fall into despair. Fairly disorganized in general, there is too much anecdotal information with far too many contradictions in the medical sections (particularly the parts about acid balance in the diet). You're just dropkicked into various technical sections without any handholding and then thrown to the wolves of information overload. When I was first diagnosed with rosacea, I needed some simple guidelines. I was depressed, felt like Mother Nature had screwed me over, and needed some positive steps to move forward immediately. Do yourself a favor and visit rosacea-dot-org or some other website that offers clearer, more direct guidelines on health, medicine, and other regimens so that your skin can start to look and feel better right away. That's what I did. It's free. After three months of treatment and some dietary adjustments, my face looks much better! Average Rating:![]() |
